KHE + Weber Z-Matcher

The Weber Z-Matcher is an impedance matching device for tube amps and speaker cabs (or load boxes). The impedance can be set for the amp and load separately. It matches 2, 2.6, 4, 5.3, 8, and 16 ohms amplifiers to 2, 2.6, 4, 5.3, 8, and 16 ohms speaker cabs. The Z-Matcher is a passive device (big transformer) that requires no AC power. It does not color or affect the tone in any way.

It is an excellent addition to any amp switching system to match the impedances by the push of a switch, without reaching behind the back of the amps. Here’s my personal amp rig with the Weber Z-Matcher:

Wiring & Setup

  1. Connect the Z-Matcher to the KHE Attenuator Insert Loop, so is connected between the amp outputs and the speaker cabinets. If an attenuator is used too in the setup, connect the Z-Matcher in front of the attenuator.

    1. Connect the white KHE S-Line Send jack to the Z-Matcher Input jack, using a speaker cable.

    2. Connect the white KHE S-Line Return jack to the Z-Matcher Output jack, using a speaker cable.

  2. Activate the Attenuator Loop in the KHE System Menu after connecting it. B default, the Attenuator Loop is deactivated. If not activated, the device won’t work correctly. See this link: How to activate the KHE Attenuator Insert Loop

  3. Set the Z-Matcher Impedance Switches. Do not rotate these switcher under signal conditions. Always deactivate the amp on the KHE before switching the impedance, to ensure the amp is safely loaded all the time.

    1. Set the Amp Impedance Switch to the value of the amp speaker output. For example, if using an 8 ohm output, set the Z-Matcher to 8 ohm

    2. Set the Speaker Impedance Switch to the value of the speaker cab or load box. For example, if using an 16 ohm cab, set the Z-Matcher to 16 ohm. Or if using two 8 ohm cabs in parallel with the KHE Dual-Cab Mode, set the Z-Matcher to 4 ohm.

Notes:

  • Always deactivate the amp on the KHE when operating the Z-Matcher switches to keep your amps safe. Never switch them under signal.

  • The current version of the Z-Matcher is rated for 100 Watt RMS. Some older versions are 50W RMS only. Make sure not to overload your device.

  • Do not use the Z-Matcher with transistor amps. Only use it with mono guitar tube amplifiers. The KHE can not bypass the Z-Matcher, it must be disconnected.

  • The Line Out of the Z-Matcher can be used to send a dry amp signal to an recording interface or effects unit in wet/dry/wet setups.

  • The Z-Matcher is a passive device that requires no AC power. It does not color or affect the tone in any way.

  • The Weber Z-Matcher is no load box or dummy load.
